The last time I checked this location out, there was a comedically-minded anti-zombie emergency kit here. Someone's got an interest in crisis-inspired humour in Centretown.

Uploading some new photos taken this afternoon to Flickr tonight after having watched "The Next Doctor" on Space.

A confession: I'm of mixed feelings about the change of venue for Doctor Who tonight. On the first hand, it's genre-appropriate. On the second, considering that the whole franchise in question was begun by a public broadcaster - the BBC - the last four years' worth of participation in and broadcast of the revival by the CBC - our own public broadcaster - was also very fitting in my mind. I would prefer that the relationship continue, but given the sense of fiscal siege "Mothercorp" finds itself under these days, I'm saddened and not entirely surprised to see that relationship imperilled if not at an outright end. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on CBC-related blogs as well as dwin.org for further developments.

Well, that's my proposed nickname for this particular Toronto intersection. Is the sculpture installation still in place?

Oh, sure. The official line was that the building was being renovated.

Everyone knew of the unholy rituals being held in the sub-basement, though. Not "unholy" as in "demonic", but just "different". A new cabinet was being inducted into the Order of the Canal-Waders, and there was a flood-diversion pipe running right under the building for the purpose.

Found at the site of the Paradise Comicon. Apparently one of the few survivors of one of Mel Lastman's promotional tactics during his tenure as mayor of Toronto.

Any others still lurking around?

One of those boxes you see at city street corners everywhere, the kind where the electronic guts of a given intersection's traffic signals are stowed away but still easy to reach.

Someone in Victoria had an interesting idea about putting these boxes to more than one use at once, I thought.

Now, Ottawans who happen to be seeing this picture right now, tell me true: don't you wish we were getting stuff like this from City Hall?

Specifically, in the Glebe next to the local Mrs. Tiggy Winkles store. I was en route to the ByMUG meeting scheduled for that Sunday.

Like a good Tintin fan of days past, I took the picture.

One of the things that our current transit strike hasn't kept me from was the Ottawa SF Society Christmas party.

Herein are Joel Polowin, Lyn Saunders and one other noble soul at the Scrabble table.

Just to show you how it looked coming into town on the train from Ottawa.

That's the general neighbourhood for next year's WorldCon, Anticipation. The main hotel, the Montréal Delta, is north of that building by what looks to be a block or two.

Later this morning, before Con*Cept resumes, I hope to climb Mount Royal.

Some things are just unmovable images in the mind.

The first night was interesting enough, although I'm a little ticked at missing the "how to" on fanfilms.

Meanwhile, I'm hearing from various sources including Facebook and words_of_prey that Manhunter got the chop. Again.

I am displeased.

Talk about an attention-getter of a title, huh?

Anyway. Went to the OSFS meeting, had fun as we discussed the science of finding extrasolar planets. I was mildly surprised by the relative lack of attendance, but it's the first meeting of the fall and the room was smaller than we've gotten used to. Our old space at the Dalhousie Community Centre has been modified with hardwood floors for dance classes to be held. Not good for moving folding tables and stackable chairs.

Feels like the home stretch on the short story SF project, but I'm still trying to nail down a few details here and there. Some of it's trying to listen to the characters, one or two things are research issues.

My camera. My good and loyal Canon A70, after six years...is starting to get cranky about battery pack issues. I know I charged up and loaded a fresh batch not 48 hours ago, and it keeps the auto-shutdown dance. Most recently, just minutes ago in mid-upload to my iBook. Not convenient, and I may have lost all the pictures of the last 2 days in the process. I may just decide to buy one of those discontinued but still being sold models at Henry's tomorrow.

If the day job leads that sprung up on Wednesday and Thursday don't deliver tomorrow, that is.

One of the things that makes travel worth doing is seeing things unique to the places you visit. This is one of those things, but when I looked at it with my own eyes it seemed as if it deserved more kindness from those visiting than it's gotten of late. I found it in the downtown section of Summerside, PEI, at a place that used to be a hub of the local rail system. The rails were pulled out of the Island years ago, but the land was turned into a walking trail that runs from one end of the country to the other.





Some things deserve better than they get...

Seems like the last couple of months were full of travel and visuals...
